Villain: Manipulating the Heroines into hating the Protagonist• Chapter 866

He needed a secure location, a temporary sanctuary to sort through the spoils of his recent, bloody endeavors and, more importantly, to delve deeper into the cultivation scriptures he had acquired. "Junior Brother Wang," Yue Lingshan continued, gesturing towards her companion, "allow me to introduce Fairy Liu Ruyan of the Crimson Pill Sect. Yue Lingshan had seen him fight before, but his current level of skill, the effortless way he dismantled these powerful beasts, was still breathtaking.

The wind sighing through the jagged spires of the Bone Dragon Peaks carried a desolate chill.

Wang Jian stood on a high precipice, the eerie crimson twilight of the Blood Forbidden Ground painting the skeletal landscape in hues of perpetual dusk.

He needed a secure location, a temporary sanctuary to sort through the spoils of his recent, bloody endeavors and, more importantly, to delve deeper into the cultivation scriptures he had acquired.

His Steller Demonic Meridian Scripture was potent, but it was a living art, designed to evolve, to incorporate new strengths.

His gaze swept the desolate terrain below.

He spotted a narrow, almost invisible fissure in the side of a lesser peak – the kind of place that might house a reclusive beast.

Perfect.

He descended, his movements silent and fluid.

As he neared the fissure, a low growl emanated from within, followed by the scuttling sound of multiple legs.

A moment later, a monstrous Gloomfang Cave Spider, easily a high-level First Rank beast, its carapace the color of obsidian and its eight eyes gleaming with malevolent red light, emerged from the darkness.

It was flanked by two smaller, but still formidable, spinnerets.

Wang Jian didn't hesitate.

Glacial Bite hummed in his hand.

The fight was swift and brutal.

The Gloomfang Cave Spider's venomous fangs and entangling webs were a threat, but Wang Jian's speed, the icy bite of his spirit artifact sword, and his relentless precision were too much for it.

He dispatched the spinnerets first, then engaged the larger beast, his blade a blur of silver, exploiting the momentary openings in its chitinous armor.

Soon, the cave was silent again, save for Wang Jian's even breathing.

Another set of beast cores – one large, two small, all pulsing with a dark, earthy energy – joined his collection.

The cave itself was surprisingly deep and dry, a perfect temporary hideout.

For the next five days, Wang Jian immersed himself in organization and study.

The cave floor became a tableau of his recent acquisitions.

He carefully unrolled the cultivation manuals.

The Azure Sword Clan's foundational sword art – 'Azure Stream Swordplay' – was aggressive, focused on swift, flowing attacks.

He analyzed its Qi pathways, its core principles.

'Some interesting concepts for offensive bursts, but too reliant on a specific sword type and elemental affinity.

My Steller Qi is more versatile.

'The scrolls from the Hundred Beast Manor disciples were a treasure trove.

'Spirit Beast Compendium: Vol.

1 (Common & Uncommon First Rank Beasts)', 'Principles of Soul Imprinting & Contract Formation', 'Nourishing the Beast Soul: Diets and Spiritual Attunement', 'Recognizing Ancient Bloodlines: A Primer'.

His eyes gleamed as he absorbed the information.

'Imprinting a soul mark… forging a spiritual contract… This is far more detailed than that crude insect manual.

The potential… if I could find a beast with a truly ancient or powerful bloodline…' He made a mental note to keep a sharp eye out for unique fauna.

The pellets he'd looted were varied: some standard healing elixirs, a few potent Qi recovery draughts (which he analyzed for their ingredients and refinement methods), and, alarmingly, a vial of 'Crimson Soulbane Powder' from one of the Blood Fiend sect members – a highly corrosive poison that attacked the spiritual soul.

'Dangerous.

But potentially useful if I ever need to… subtly incapacitate someone.

' He stored it with extreme care.

The weapons were a mixed bag.

The Azure Sword disciple's spirit sword was decent, a good quality low-grade artifact, but Glacial Bite felt more attuned to his current cultivation.

He'd keep it; it might fetch a good price later, or serve as a spare.

There were also a few spirit-tempered daggers and short swords from other fallen foes – useful for trade or perhaps for Yue Lingshan if she preferred a secondary blade.

Talismans.

He had a small arsenal now.

Several offensive fire and lightning talismans from various disciples, a few good defensive earth-warding talismans, and even a couple of rare 'Shadowmeld Talismans' that allowed for temporary invisibility in low light.

He set aside a selection for Yue Lingshan – a few potent attack talismans, a couple of the best defensive ones, and one of the Shadowmeld Talismans.

'Her safety is paramount.

And a well-equipped companion is a more effective one.

'The beast hides were numerous.

Shadowfang Wolf pelts, Thornbacked Boar hides, Stone-Skinned Ape leather, even the tough, crystalline plates of the Crystal-Horned Rhino.

'These could be used to craft some excellent inner armor or defensive robes.

The Rhino hide, especially… its inherent earth energy resistance is remarkable.

A project for later, when I have access to a proper artifact forger.

'And the beast cores – dozens of them now, pulsing with various elemental energies.

He sorted them by potency and element, valuable currency or ingredients for future alchemy.

The most important task, however, was refining his Steller Demonic Meridian Scripture.

He meticulously compared the new cultivation arts he'd acquired, dissecting their strengths, identifying their weaknesses.

He absorbed the principles of the Azure Stream Swordplay's aggressive Qi flow, the subtle defensive nuances from a minor earth-based art he'd found, even the beast-attunement concepts from the Hundred Beast Manor texts.

His powerful soul worked tirelessly, weaving these new threads into the existing tapestry of his scripture.

He didn't make drastic changes to its core structure yet – that would require Foundation Establishment level understanding and resources.

But he subtly optimized its Qi circulation pathways for combat, enhanced its passive Steller Body Enhancement by incorporating some of the beast resilience principles, and even found ways to make his control over the switch between spiritual and demonic aspects of his Steller Qi more fluid, more instinctive.

Five days passed in this intense solitude.

When he finally emerged from the cave, the Bone Dragon Peaks looming before him, he felt… more complete.

His Twelfth Stage Qi Condensation was more consolidated, his scripture more refined, his mind sharp and focused.

He made his way to the pre-agreed rendezvous point: the tallest, most distinctive spire among the Bone Dragon Peaks, a jagged monolith that pierced the crimson twilight like a skeletal finger.

As he ascended the treacherous, winding path, he sensed two familiar auras.

He rounded a massive, bone-white boulder and saw them.

Princess Yue Lingshan, her veiled form exuding a quiet strength, her Verdant Willow Blade sheathed, her Nightwind Terror Fan held loosely in one hand.

She looked a little travel-worn, her robes dusted with the grime of the Forbidden Ground, but her eyes, visible even through the fine silk of her veil, shone with a new, hard-won confidence.

And beside her…Wang Jian's eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise in his mind.

It was the ethereal beauty from the Crimson Pill Sect.

Her medicinal green robes were also stained, her veil slightly askew, revealing a glimpse of a perfectly sculpted jawline and skin that seemed to glow with an inner luminescence.

Even in her current disheveled state, her unique, otherworldly temperament was undeniable.

Yue Lingshan saw him first.

Her relief was palpable, though she maintained her composure.

"Junior Brother Wang!

You've arrived!

" Her voice, though formally addressing him, held an underlying warmth that only he would recognize.

The Crimson Pill disciple turned, her gaze, cool and appraising, falling upon Wang Jian.

"Junior Brother Wang," Yue Lingshan continued, gesturing towards her companion, "allow me to introduce Fairy Liu Ruyan of the Crimson Pill Sect.

Sister Liu, this is my sect brother, Wang Jian.

"Liu Ruyan offered a polite, graceful bow.

"Fellow Daoist Wang.

It is a pleasure.

Sister Yue has spoken of your… resourcefulness.

" Her voice was soft, melodious, like the chime of distant temple bells.

Wang Jian returned the bow, his expression carefully neutral, though his mind was already assessing.

'Liu Ruyan.

So that's her name.

She's even more captivating up close.

That temperament… truly unique.

' He offered a polite smile.

"Fairy Liu.

An unexpected pleasure.

Senior Sister Yue, it seems your journey was… eventful.

""Indeed, Junior Brother Wang," Yue Lingshan replied.

"Sister Liu and I encountered some… troublesome, Crimson-Eyed Vultures.

We found it mutually beneficial to travel together.

"Liu Ruyan added, "Sister Yue's assistance was invaluable.

Her skill with that fan is quite remarkable.

"Wang Jian nodded.

"I see.

" He then turned to Yue Lingshan.

"Senior Sister Yue, you seem unharmed.

Your mission to gather inspiration for your arrays seems to have led you far.

" He kept the facade, even now.

"The inspiration was… abundant, Junior Brother Wang," Yue Lingshan said, a subtle smile playing on her lips beneath her veil.

Liu Ruyan then addressed both of them, her tone becoming more earnest.

"Fellow Daoist Wang, Sister Yue.

I must confess, my primary purpose in entering this Blood Forbidden Ground was not just to gather common herbs.

"Her gaze became more intense.

"My sect possesses ancient records.

Ten years ago, during the last opening of this Ground, our disciples discovered the location of a unique spiritual flame – the Blood Spirit Flame.

It is said to be born from the congealed resentful energies of this ancient battlefield, yet paradoxically, it possesses a surprising purity, excellent for alchemical refinement or for fire-affinity cultivators seeking to enhance their innate flames.

"Wang Jian's mind instantly focused.

'Blood Spirit Flame.

This is the opportunity I was hoping for.

' He kept his expression carefully neutral.

Yue Lingshan also listened intently, though her face remained hidden.

"I have the map to its approximate location," Liu Ruyan continued.

"It lies within a series of volcanic caves, not far from here, in the Cinderwaste Caldera.

However, the records also speak of powerful guardian beasts and treacherous terrain.

Alone… I fear I cannot reach it, let alone subdue it.

"She looked at Wang Jian, then at Yue Lingshan, a hopeful plea in her eyes.

"Sister Yue, Fellow Daoist Wang… your strength is evident.

If you would consent to accompany me, to help me secure this Blood Spirit Flame… I would be eternally grateful.

I know the locations of several patches of rare, high-age herbs that grow only near such geothermal vents – herbs vital for advanced Qi Condensation pellets and even some preliminary Foundation Establishment preparations while also sharing some recipes that are exclusive to my Crimson Pill Sect.

I would gladly share their locations with you as recompense.

And, of course," she added, her gaze lingering on Wang Jian for a moment, "I would owe you both a significant personal favor.

"Wang Jian exchanged a subtle glance with Yue Lingshan.

'Herbs for Foundation Establishment… and recipes and a favor from a prominent Crimson Pill disciple.

Useful.

' His own plan to acquire the flame for himself remained firmly in place, but her offer sweetened the deal considerably.

Yue Lingshan, sensing Wang Jian's unspoken agreement, spoke first.

"Sister Liu, your quest sounds perilous, but the potential rewards are indeed tempting.

If Junior Brother Wang is agreeable, I believe we would be willing to assist.

"Wang Jian nodded slowly.

"Fairy Liu, your offer is… generous.

The path to cultivation is fraught with danger, and mutual assistance is often key to survival.

We will accompany you.

The herbs, recipes you mentioned, and your future favor, will be adequate compensation.

"Liu Ruyan's veiled face seemed to brighten.

A soft, relieved sigh escaped her lips.

"Oh, thank you, Fellow Daoist Wang, Sister Yue!

You are too kind!

" She then looked at Wang Jian, a newfound respect in her eyes.

His calm demeanor, his decisive acceptance, the way Yue Lingshan deferred to his unspoken lead – it all pointed to a cultivator of significant capability and charisma.

"Perhaps… it would be more appropriate if I addressed you as Senior Brother Wang?

Your cultivation and bearing clearly surpass my own.

"Wang Jian offered a slight, noncommittal smile.

"As you wish, Fairy Liu.

" He wasn't going to correct her.

Let her think what she wished.

And so, their temporary alliance was forged.

The Cinderwaste Caldera was a desolate, volcanic region about half a day's flight from the Bone Dragon Peaks.

The air here was thick with the acrid smell of sulfur, and plumes of steam hissed from cracks in the scorched, black earth.

Twisted, heat-resistant Ironbark trees, their leaves a dull, metallic red, clung precariously to the rocky slopes.

Liu Ruyan led them, consulting a faded, hand-drawn map.

"According to the records, the entrance to the caves is hidden within that cluster of obsidian pillars," she said, pointing towards a jagged formation of volcanic rock that looked like a dragon's broken teeth.

As they approached, a series of guttural roars echoed from the pillars.

A pack of six Crimsonmane Jackals, high-level First Rank beasts with fur the color of dried blood and manes that seemed to smolder with internal fire, bounded out to meet them, their eyes burning with territorial fury.

"Guardian beasts," Liu Ruyan murmured, her hand going to her short sword.

"Allow me, Fairy Liu, Senior Sister Yue," Wang Jian said calmly, stepping forward, Glacial Bite already in his hand.

He met the jackals' charge with a cold, almost contemptuous efficiency.

His movements were a blur.

Flowing Metal Slash, augmented by his dense Steller Qi, turned Glacial Bite into an instrument of icy death.

He didn't use any fancy spells, just pure, overwhelming swordsmanship.

The Crimsonmane Jackals, despite their fiery auras and vicious pack tactics, were no match for him.

He dispatched them one by one, his blade finding every opening, every weakness, his passive Steller Body Enhancement shrugging off their desperate, snapping bites with ease.

Yue Lingshan and Liu Ruyan watched, momentarily stunned by his sheer combat prowess.

Yue Lingshan had seen him fight before, but his current level of skill, the effortless way he dismantled these powerful beasts, was still breathtaking.

Liu Ruyan was even more astounded.

This "Junior Brother Wang" from Mystic Peak… his Qi felt as dense and potent as a peak Thirteenth Stage cultivator's, his swordsmanship was exquisite, and his physical resilience was shocking.

She'd seen one jackal's fiery bite connect with his arm, only for him to barely flinch as if it were a mere insect sting, the robe singed but his flesh seemingly unharmed.

'He is… extraordinary,' Liu Ruyan thought, a flicker of admiration, and something more, in her eyes as she watched him calmly collect the fire-aspected inner cores from the fallen jackals.

Wang Jian didn't try to charm Liu Ruyan.

Not yet.

Not with Yue Lingshan standing right there, her veiled gaze sharp and possessive.

He knew Yue Lingshan's temper.

One wrong move, one overly familiar glance towards the Crimson Pill beauty, and he'd face a far more dangerous battle than any beast in this Forbidden Ground.

He maintained a polite, professional distance with Liu Ruyan, focusing on the task at hand.

'Patience.

Opportunity will arise.

For now, secure the flame, secure the herbs.

'They found the cave entrance, a narrow, steam-wreathed fissure hidden behind the largest obsidian pillar.

"This is it," Liu Ruyan confirmed, her voice a little breathless.

"The records say the passages within are labyrinthine, filled with geothermal vents and… other guardians.

"As they ventured deeper, the air grew hotter, the scent of sulfur more intense.

The cave tunnels twisted and turned, often splitting into multiple paths.

Liu Ruyan consulted her map frequently, but it was clear the cave system was more complex than her sect's ten-year-old records indicated.

They encountered more resistance.

Swarms of Cinderwing Bats, their leathery wings coated in volcanic ash, attacked from the shadowy ceilings.

Wang Jian dealt with them with wide, sweeping slashes of Glacial Bite, his Qi creating arcs of frigid light that cut through their formations.

Deeper still, they faced a territorial Stonefist Ape, a Peak First Rank beast whose fists were like granite boulders and whose roars could shake the very stone around them.

This battle was more challenging.

The Stonefist Ape was incredibly strong and its hide almost impervious.

Wang Jian was forced to use his Azure Serpent Strike to bind its powerful limbs and his Crimson Sparrow Darts to distract it, while Yue Lingshan provided support with her Nightwind Terror Fan, creating disorienting gusts and illusory patterns.

Liu Ruyan, from a safer distance, hurled alchemical pellets that exploded into clouds of weakening gas or sticky, entangling substances.

Wang Jian eventually brought the ape down with a perfectly timed thrust of Glacial Bite into its exposed throat, after a grueling ten-minute battle that left him panting and his Qi significantly depleted.

Yue Lingshan and Liu Ruyan were also tired but unharmed.

Liu Ruyan looked at Wang Jian with unconcealed awe.

"Senior Brother Wang… your strength is truly… humbling.

To defeat a Peak First Rank Stonefist Ape with such… finesse.

"Wang Jian merely nodded, already consuming a Swift River Qi Pill to replenish his energy.

"We press on.

The flame should be close.

"Finally, after navigating a particularly narrow, steam-filled passage, Liu Ruyan stopped.

"This is it.

The central chamber.

The Blood Spirit Flame should be within.

"They stepped into a vast, cathedral-like cavern.

The air here was superheated, shimmering with thermal distortions.

In the center of the cavern, atop a jagged pedestal of obsidian, burned a flame.

It was a mesmerizing sight.

The flame was about the size of a human head, its core a deep, pulsating crimson, like congealed blood, but its outer edges flickered with an unexpectedly pure, almost ethereal white light.

It radiated an intense heat, but also a strange, palpable aura of ancient resentment and raw spiritual power.

This was the Blood Spirit Flame.

"It's… beautiful," Yue Lingshan breathed, her eyes wide behind her veil.

Liu Ruyan was trembling with excitement.

"We found it!

After all these years…"Wang Jian's gaze was fixed on the flame, his mind already calculating the best way to subdue and absorb it.

His Steller Demonic Meridian Scripture sang with anticipation.

But then, his senses, sharpened by his cultivation and the Eagle Eye Spirit Pill he'd taken before entering the caves, picked up something else.

A subtle, almost hidden resonance.

A vibrant, thrumming life energy, pure and incredibly potent, emanating from a narrow, almost concealed side passage to their left, a passage not marked on Liu Ruyan's map.

His eyes narrowed.

'That's not the flame.

That's… Wood elemental.

And incredibly pure.

Far purer than any spirit herb.

'He focused his spiritual sense, pushing it gently towards the source.

The life energy was concentrated, pulsing like a hidden heart.

'A wood spirit essence!

' His mind raced.

'Similar to a spiritual flame, but composed of pure, condensed life force.

If I could absorb that… My Steller Qi could gain a potent Wood attribute, enhancing my healing abilities, my vitality, even my affinity for growing spirit herbs.

This… this is an even greater treasure than the Blood Spirit Flame!

'He had to have it.

He glanced at Yue Lingshan, a subtle, almost imperceptible signal passing between them – a slight tightening of his jaw, a specific flicker in his eyes, a code they had developed for such situations.

She understood instantly.

Distraction needed.

I'm going for something else.

He then turned to Liu Ruyan, his expression one of cautious urgency.

"Fairy Liu, the flame is potent.

But I sense another, weaker energy signature emanating from that side passage.

" He pointed towards the hidden opening.

"It could be a lesser guardian beast, or perhaps some other elemental anomaly that might interfere with your attempt to secure the Blood Spirit Flame.

I will scout ahead quickly, neutralize any minor threats.

You and Senior Sister Yue prepare to approach the flame.

Stay alert.

"Liu Ruyan, her focus entirely on the mesmerizing Blood Spirit Flame, nodded distractedly.

"Yes, yes, good thinking, Senior Brother Wang.

Be swift.

We must secure the flame before its energy fluctuates.

"Wang Jian gave Yue Lingshan one last meaningful look, then slipped into the narrow side passage, Glacial Bite held ready.

The passage twisted and turned, descending deeper into the earth.

The air here grew cooler, losing the sulfurous taint, replaced by a faint, sweet, earthy aroma.

The walls were no longer scorched obsidian but damp, moss-covered stone.

He soon encountered the guardians of this hidden sanctum.

Swarms of Stonefang Shriekers, cave-dwelling bats the size of small hawks, their fur the color of granite, their fangs long and sharp, their eyes blind but their hearing preternaturally acute.

They attacked in waves, their high-pitched shrieks creating disorienting sonic pulses.

Wang Jian moved through them like a phantom, Glacial Bite a whirlwind of icy light.

He didn't waste Qi on widespread elemental spells.

Instead, he used precise, targeted slashes, his blade finding the vulnerable points in their leathery wings or their soft underbellies.

He was a silent harbinger of death, his movements economical, deadly.

Deeper still, the passage opened into a breathtakingly beautiful hidden grotto.

The grotto was bathed in a soft, emerald green light.

In the center, nestled within a cradle of moss-covered roots from an ancient, petrified tree, pulsed a heart-sized orb of pure, vibrant green energy.

It throbbed with an incredible life force, releasing waves of pure, unadulterated Wood elemental Qi that made the very air feel alive, making the moss on the walls grow visibly.

Delicate, luminescent spirit flowers bloomed around its base.

This was the Verdant Eternal Spring Essence, a wood spirit essence of unimaginable purity.

But it was not unguarded.

Coiled around the petrified tree, its massive body blending almost perfectly with the dark roots and shadows, was a monstrous beast.

It was a Duskscale Earthrender Serpent, a serpentine creature easily thirty feet long, its scales like overlapping plates of dark, slate-grey stone, so dense they looked almost metallic.

Its head was broad and flat, with eyes like molten gold that burned with ancient, predatory intelligence.

It had no limbs, but moved with a terrifying, silent fluidity.

A faint, earthy pressure radiated from it, a pressure that spoke of immense power.

Mid-Grade Second Rank Beast.

Equivalent to a mid-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator.

Wang Jian felt a thrill of anticipation, mixed with a healthy dose of caution.

His Glacial Bite hummed faintly, sensing the beast's power.

'This… will be a true fight,' he thought, his Steller Qi surging, his body tensing.

'No holding back now.

That Verdant Eternal Spring Essence… it must be mine.

'The Duskscale Earthrender Serpent uncoiled slowly, its golden eyes fixed on Wang Jian, a low hiss, like the grinding of stones, escaping its massive jaws.

The battle for the heart of life was about to begin.
