His gaze swept the desolate terrain below.

He spotted a narrow, almost invisible fissure in the side of a lesser peak – the kind of place that might house a reclusive beast.

Perfect.

He descended, his movements silent and fluid.

As he neared the fissure, a low growl emanated from within, followed by the scuttling sound of multiple legs.

A moment later, a monstrous Gloomfang Cave Spider, easily a high-level First Rank beast, its carapace the color of obsidian and its eight eyes gleaming with malevolent red light, emerged from the darkness.

It was flanked by two smaller, but still formidable, spinnerets.

Wang Jian didn't hesitate.

Glacial Bite hummed in his hand.

The fight was swift and brutal.

The Gloomfang Cave Spider's venomous fangs and entangling webs were a threat, but Wang Jian's speed, the icy bite of his spirit artifact sword, and his relentless precision were too much for it.

He dispatched the spinnerets first, then engaged the larger beast, his blade a blur of silver, exploiting the momentary openings in its chitinous armor.

Soon, the cave was silent again, save for Wang Jian's even breathing.

Another set of beast cores – one large, two small, all pulsing with a dark, earthy energy – joined his collection.

For the next five days, Wang Jian immersed himself in organization and study.

The cave floor became a tableau of his recent acquisitions.

He carefully unrolled the cultivation manuals.

There were also a few spirit-tempered daggers and short swords from other fallen foes – useful for trade or perhaps for Yue Lingshan if she preferred a secondary blade.

Several offensive fire and lightning talismans from various disciples, a few good defensive earth-warding talismans, and even a couple of rare 'Shadowmeld Talismans' that allowed for temporary invisibility in low light.

He set aside a selection for Yue Lingshan – a few potent attack talismans, a couple of the best defensive ones, and one of the Shadowmeld Talismans.

'Her safety is paramount.

And a well-equipped companion is a more effective one.

'The beast hides were numerous.

Shadowfang Wolf pelts, Thornbacked Boar hides, Stone-Skinned Ape leather, even the tough, crystalline plates of the Crystal-Horned Rhino.

'These could be used to craft some excellent inner armor or defensive robes.

The Rhino hide, especially… its inherent earth energy resistance is remarkable.

A project for later, when I have access to a proper artifact forger.

'And the beast cores – dozens of them now, pulsing with various elemental energies.

He sorted them by potency and element, valuable currency or ingredients for future alchemy.

The most important task, however, was refining his Steller Demonic Meridian Scripture.

He meticulously compared the new cultivation arts he'd acquired, dissecting their strengths, identifying their weaknesses.

He absorbed the principles of the Azure Stream Swordplay's aggressive Qi flow, the subtle defensive nuances from a minor earth-based art he'd found, even the beast-attunement concepts from the Hundred Beast Manor texts.

But he subtly optimized its Qi circulation pathways for combat, enhanced its passive Steller Body Enhancement by incorporating some of the beast resilience principles, and even found ways to make his control over the switch between spiritual and demonic aspects of his Steller Qi more fluid, more instinctive.

When he finally emerged from the cave, the Bone Dragon Peaks looming before him, he felt… more complete.

His Twelfth Stage Qi Condensation was more consolidated, his scripture more refined, his mind sharp and focused.

He made his way to the pre-agreed rendezvous point: the tallest, most distinctive spire among the Bone Dragon Peaks, a jagged monolith that pierced the crimson twilight like a skeletal finger.

As he ascended the treacherous, winding path, he sensed two familiar auras.

He rounded a massive, bone-white boulder and saw them.

Princess Yue Lingshan, her veiled form exuding a quiet strength, her Verdant Willow Blade sheathed, her Nightwind Terror Fan held loosely in one hand.

She looked a little travel-worn, her robes dusted with the grime of the Forbidden Ground, but her eyes, visible even through the fine silk of her veil, shone with a new, hard-won confidence.

And beside her…Wang Jian's eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise in his mind.

It was the ethereal beauty from the Crimson Pill Sect.

Her medicinal green robes were also stained, her veil slightly askew, revealing a glimpse of a perfectly sculpted jawline and skin that seemed to glow with an inner luminescence.

Even in her current disheveled state, her unique, otherworldly temperament was undeniable.

I must confess, my primary purpose in entering this Blood Forbidden Ground was not just to gather common herbs.

"I have the map to its approximate location," Liu Ruyan continued.

"It lies within a series of volcanic caves, not far from here, in the Cinderwaste Caldera.

However, the records also speak of powerful guardian beasts and treacherous terrain.

Alone… I fear I cannot reach it, let alone subdue it.

"She looked at Wang Jian, then at Yue Lingshan, a hopeful plea in her eyes.

"Sister Yue, Fellow Daoist Wang… your strength is evident.

If you would consent to accompany me, to help me secure this Blood Spirit Flame… I would be eternally grateful.

Twisted, heat-resistant Ironbark trees, their leaves a dull, metallic red, clung precariously to the rocky slopes.

Liu Ruyan led them, consulting a faded, hand-drawn map.

"According to the records, the entrance to the caves is hidden within that cluster of obsidian pillars," she said, pointing towards a jagged formation of volcanic rock that looked like a dragon's broken teeth.

As they approached, a series of guttural roars echoed from the pillars.

A pack of six Crimsonmane Jackals, high-level First Rank beasts with fur the color of dried blood and manes that seemed to smolder with internal fire, bounded out to meet them, their eyes burning with territorial fury.

"Guardian beasts," Liu Ruyan murmured, her hand going to her short sword.

"Allow me, Fairy Liu, Senior Sister Yue," Wang Jian said calmly, stepping forward, Glacial Bite already in his hand.

He met the jackals' charge with a cold, almost contemptuous efficiency.

His movements were a blur.

Flowing Metal Slash, augmented by his dense Steller Qi, turned Glacial Bite into an instrument of icy death.

He didn't use any fancy spells, just pure, overwhelming swordsmanship.

The Crimsonmane Jackals, despite their fiery auras and vicious pack tactics, were no match for him.

He dispatched them one by one, his blade finding every opening, every weakness, his passive Steller Body Enhancement shrugging off their desperate, snapping bites with ease.

Yue Lingshan and Liu Ruyan watched, momentarily stunned by his sheer combat prowess.

Yue Lingshan had seen him fight before, but his current level of skill, the effortless way he dismantled these powerful beasts, was still breathtaking.

Liu Ruyan was even more astounded.

This "Junior Brother Wang" from Mystic Peak… his Qi felt as dense and potent as a peak Thirteenth Stage cultivator's, his swordsmanship was exquisite, and his physical resilience was shocking.

"As they ventured deeper, the air grew hotter, the scent of sulfur more intense.

The cave tunnels twisted and turned, often splitting into multiple paths.

Liu Ruyan consulted her map frequently, but it was clear the cave system was more complex than her sect's ten-year-old records indicated.

They encountered more resistance.

Swarms of Cinderwing Bats, their leathery wings coated in volcanic ash, attacked from the shadowy ceilings.

Wang Jian dealt with them with wide, sweeping slashes of Glacial Bite, his Qi creating arcs of frigid light that cut through their formations.

Deeper still, they faced a territorial Stonefist Ape, a Peak First Rank beast whose fists were like granite boulders and whose roars could shake the very stone around them.

This battle was more challenging.

The Stonefist Ape was incredibly strong and its hide almost impervious.

Wang Jian was forced to use his Azure Serpent Strike to bind its powerful limbs and his Crimson Sparrow Darts to distract it, while Yue Lingshan provided support with her Nightwind Terror Fan, creating disorienting gusts and illusory patterns.

Liu Ruyan, from a safer distance, hurled alchemical pellets that exploded into clouds of weakening gas or sticky, entangling substances.

Wang Jian eventually brought the ape down with a perfectly timed thrust of Glacial Bite into its exposed throat, after a grueling ten-minute battle that left him panting and his Qi significantly depleted.

Yue Lingshan and Liu Ruyan were also tired but unharmed.

Liu Ruyan looked at Wang Jian with unconcealed awe.

"Senior Brother Wang… your strength is truly… humbling.

To defeat a Peak First Rank Stonefist Ape with such… finesse.

"Wang Jian merely nodded, already consuming a Swift River Qi Pill to replenish his energy.

"We press on.

The flame should be close.

They attacked in waves, their high-pitched shrieks creating disorienting sonic pulses.

Wang Jian moved through them like a phantom, Glacial Bite a whirlwind of icy light.

He didn't waste Qi on widespread elemental spells.

Instead, he used precise, targeted slashes, his blade finding the vulnerable points in their leathery wings or their soft underbellies.

He was a silent harbinger of death, his movements economical, deadly.

Deeper still, the passage opened into a breathtakingly beautiful hidden grotto.

The grotto was bathed in a soft, emerald green light.

In the center, nestled within a cradle of moss-covered roots from an ancient, petrified tree, pulsed a heart-sized orb of pure, vibrant green energy.

It throbbed with an incredible life force, releasing waves of pure, unadulterated Wood elemental Qi that made the very air feel alive, making the moss on the walls grow visibly.

Delicate, luminescent spirit flowers bloomed around its base.

This was the Verdant Eternal Spring Essence, a wood spirit essence of unimaginable purity.

But it was not unguarded.

Coiled around the petrified tree, its massive body blending almost perfectly with the dark roots and shadows, was a monstrous beast.

It was a Duskscale Earthrender Serpent, a serpentine creature easily thirty feet long, its scales like overlapping plates of dark, slate-grey stone, so dense they looked almost metallic.

Its head was broad and flat, with eyes like molten gold that burned with ancient, predatory intelligence.

Equivalent to a mid-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator.
