Her mood was easy to read.

He gulped hard, loud enough for Bastet to flick a feline ear, and forced his brain to snap back into professional mode.

Now was not the time...

This was the first time their dungeon was invaded; they couldn’t relax so freely.

It would be incredibly reckless to do so.

Thus, before Calypso’s hand could continue its adventurous journey south (again), he caught her fingers and held them still.

Not exactly pushing her away, just...

Calypso blinked, surprised for a heartbeat.

When she spoke again, her voice wasn’t sultry, not one bit.

Her eyes darted to their joined hands.

In the next second, she seized Kaiden’s other hand that had been resting on her sun-kissed shoulders.

She did so with zero hesitation and pulled it into her lap, clutching it like she absolutely refused to be outdone.

"Mine," she declared with immense feline territorialism, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Then she leaned her cheek against his shoulder, matching Calypso’s posture perfectly.

Kaiden now sat pinned between two monster girls who were very pleased with themselves, while his interface continued to display the different scenes and also granted him kill notifications.

Professional mode was getting harder by the second.

Literally and figuratively.

But he persevered.

That was when Luna suddenly clasped her hands together like a cartoon villainess who’d just seen what she had waited for for a long time, finally about to happen.

"Look, it’s happening!

" Kaiden followed her gaze.

The second path suddenly dipped downward, straight into the earth like someone had cut a chute through stone.

A brave man stepped up to the edge.

His screams bounced off the tight walls.

He clawed at the stone, trying to stop himself.

His boots kicked wildly.

His weapon clanged away from him.

Something coated the stone.

Wet.

Slick.

Impossible to grip.

" The tunnel spat him out like trash.

He dropped straight into a pit of bubbling lava.

His scream turned into a gurgle.

Then, into nothing but the sound of flesh breaking down at a terrifying speed.

Above, the woman leading the squad stiffened when his signal abruptly cut.

"What happened?!

" she snapped.

"Report!

" Only static.

Her jaw clenched.

"You three," she barked at the next group that consisted of two men and one woman.

"Go down together.

Find out what’s under there.

" They nodded and descended in a tight formation.

The first two made it to the same lower chamber.

Their lights flashed around in the darkness.

They stepped forward and instantly slid.

The third climber, still partway down the chute, froze.

He heard the scraping, the screams, the frantic attempts to stop.

He looked down from his vantage point and saw it all happen right before his very eyes.

"STOP SLIDING!

" he yelled.

As if they weren’t already trying.

He saw them hit the pit, then the sound of bodies dissolving.

He almost dropped his comm crystal, hands shaking.

He forced himself to lift it.

"Boss...

They’re gone.

They slid into...

something.

" "What do you MEAN they slid?!

I didn’t know I brought children into a fucking amusement park!

" she roared.

"They couldn’t stop.

The ground’s coated in something, maybe...

" She muttered curses under her breath, furious.

"I’ll get to the bottom of this," he decreed.

He tied a dagger to a rope and tossed it into the cavern room.

It clattered against stone, then he hauled it back up.

The blade was covered in slime.

"Damn...

" he whispered.

He lifted his comm crystal again, but just as he did, a sound burst from below.

A splash.

A rush.

A burst of heat.

Something exploded from the lava.

Thin.

Long.

Serpentine.

A monster shaped for speed and violence, with jaws snapping open as it lunged straight for his throat.

He didn’t even have time to scream.
