Chapter Summary
A Mid-level Battle General had arrived; the table had originally been reserved for him, and so had the blackfish. In Lie Lei's script, the man should have barged in and beaten Liu Ning senseless; then Lie Lei would plead mercy for the War General-level Expert, earn a bit of Face, and show Liu Ning what a true Strong One looked like. Liu Ning was an Ordinary People's Young Master, far less demanding than Bai Jingye, so Xu Chao knew the drill—he could keep Liu Ning happy.
They had just started eating fish when a commotion broke out at the door. A Mid-level Battle General had arrived; the table had originally been reserved for him, and so had the blackfish. Liu Ning had taken both, and Lie Lei was delighted—so you think you're hot stuff, kid? You thought you could just grab someone else's things? Just wait and see how this ends.
Apart from Lie Lei, no one else shared that thought. To them, no matter who walked in, they probably couldn't shake the Bai family. If you compared Foundations, even the Prefectural Governor's own Young Master would only be on equal footing. With just a single warrior, the newcomer was bound to lose.
The fellow had sounded fierce, but the manager only whispered a few words in his ear; the man's scowl froze, he shut up, and stalked out in sullen silence.
Lie Lei stared, dumbstruck. No wonder the Waiter hadn't given him any respect—even someone a rank higher than himself got no special treatment here. What had that guy just heard? Why wasn't he making trouble? In Lie Lei's script, the man should have barged in and beaten Liu Ning senseless; then Lie Lei would plead mercy for the War General-level Expert, earn a bit of Face, and show Liu Ning what a true Strong One looked like. Sadly, the play was rejected; three sentences sent the man packing.
Lie Lei was still lost in thought when he looked up to find the dishes gone. Liu Ning had served Wang Fang the finest cut of blackfish, then gone into whirlwind mode. Who told you to skip eating? Now you can content yourself with the dregs of the soup.
‘That was fantastic—I've been craving this meal for ages. A chef like that is worlds apart from Ordinary People; every credit was worth it.'
Wang Fang, less than ladylike, patted her stomach to show she was stuffed.
Apart from Lie Lei, the two of them ate happily; Lie Lei shot Liu Ning a venomous glare, wishing he could tear him limb from limb.
‘Check, please…'
At the last moment Lie Lei grandly waved the Waiter over. The meal couldn't be cheap; money would be his final trump card. Connections or not, Liu Ning obviously didn't have the cash—look at those hundred-credit street-stall clothes. Could he pay for a feast like this?
‘I'm sorry, sir. Mr. Xu has instructed that, as Mr. Liu holds a VIP black card, the bill is waived.'
The Waiter spoke respectfully. Lie Lei felt no sting—he'd expected to pay; if it was free, fine. But someone else wasn't ready to let it go; a bleeding was required.
‘What do you mean? Do you think we can't afford it? When a customer asks for the bill, you obey. Bring every last item and hand it to this gentleman. Don't decide for yourselves.'
Liu Ning's words made Lie Lei's jaw drop. The Waiter had already said the meal was comped—what show was Liu Ning putting on? And it wasn't even his money.
A few million, maybe ten, had just been on the table; saving it was only sensible. War General Level warriors earned fast, but Lie Lei was born stingy—he'd never want to spend it.
The Waiter retreated awkwardly; just as he was about to present the check, Xu Chao reappeared, slipped him a new bill, and with a look ordered him to deliver it. Xu Chao served Bai Jingye, eyes and ears everywhere. Liu Ning was an Ordinary People's Young Master, far less demanding than Bai Jingye, so Xu Chao knew the drill—he could keep Liu Ning happy. As for Lie Lei, blame your own bad luck.
‘What kind of bill is this? You're robbing me! Even with everything, it's ten million tops. Now it's a hundred million—are you joking?'
Lie Lei sprang up at the figure. Impossible—some blackfish and a few dishes could never reach that.
‘Sir, please watch your words; the Hotel reserves the right to pursue you. This is no ordinary blackfish—it's the mid-section, as you know, the most expensive cut. Therefore the fish is seventy million. And since you asked for the bill, this bottle of wine is included: forty million. The small change has been waived for Mr. Liu's sake; please settle the rest promptly.'
The Waiter spoke without arrogance or servility. Even a Strong One can't dine-and-dash here; those who try, even above your level, pay the price. The Bai family isn't to be trifled with.
Lie Lei froze, checked the order sheet—blackfish came in grades. The page he'd seen listed the ordinary, totaling ten-odd million; flip the sheet and you found the premium, exactly as the Waiter said. When served, all three of them had seen the picture matching the flipped page—no deception.
Wang Fang tugged Lie Lei's sleeve, signaling him to pay up. The numbers were clear, the room was full of eyes, and acquaintances might gossip. Besides, for them the sum wasn't exorbitant—they earned fast.
‘No way. You never explained when you served; Now you demand payment—outrageous…'
Lie Lei ignored her. Wang Fang looked at him in surprise. Normally he was generous—money can solve any problem, he'd say. What had changed? Perhaps he only spent small change; today's price tag was huge, and he couldn't bear it. Was this his true colors?
‘How about…'
Liu Ning lifted his smart device—offering to cover the bill. Lie Lei would never allow that.
