Chapter Summary
The kid had come here for the exam, and everyone around seemed to avoid him like the plague. According to the Garrison Headquarters' regulations, whichever of these two could obtain the Junior Warrior identity would become the Controller of this Gathering Point. If he failed the exam, there was absolutely no way he could stop this guy, because there were only two Warrior Apprentiles in the Gathering Point.
Noticing someone looking at him, the little guy glanced timidly at Liu Ning. Coming from a small, remote place, he held a sense of awe towards all these outsiders.
"No need to be so nervous. There are probably many people here who aren't as good as you. Just relax and settle your mind. Why pray to all the gods and buddhas here?"
Liu Ning chuckled and patted the fellow on the shoulder, which made the young man feel much more at ease. Liu Ning was the first person to speak to him. The kid had come here for the exam, and everyone around seemed to avoid him like the plague. He didn't want to have a bad odor either, but he came from the places beneath the City Wall—the filthiest parts of the entire City. No matter how much he washed, that smell seemed to cling to him.
"Thank you, sir. I always feel my strength isn't sufficient, but I have no choice but to take this assessment. If I don't, my Gathering Point might be lost."
This Fellow was far too anxious. Once someone started talking to him, his mouth just wouldn't stop. Through their conversation, Liu Ning basically understood his situation.
Despite his tattered clothes, this guy was actually the Young Master of a Gathering Point. His father had been the Controller of that point but had died in the Wilderness, so Now the Gathering Point had no Controller—a common enough occurrence.
The Gathering Point currently had only two Warrior Apprentices. When Liu Ning heard this number, he could hardly believe it. He had thought Wei Xiong's Gathering Point was poor enough, but at least Wei Xiong's place could still muster over a dozen Warrior Apprentices. How on earth did that place manage with only two? And one of them was the son of the former Controller.
The other Warrior Apprentice was none other than this kid. The number he drew was 87. Liu Ning's drawn number was 88. Behind Liu Ning was number 89, who was the other Warrior Apprentice.
According to the Garrison Headquarters' regulations, whichever of these two could obtain the Junior Warrior identity would become the Controller of this Gathering Point.
Hearing this, Liu Ning still looked quite surprised. It seemed this also involved a power struggle. Even though that Gathering Point was poor, it was still a piece of property.
Liu Ning also scanned number 89. Number 89 wasn't sitting here but was chatting with a group of people in the distance. Clearly, that guy's strength was formidable. If nothing went wrong, he should be able to pass the Junior Warrior assessment, whereas the kid beside him lacked that capability.
"He's also from our Gathering Point, grew up there from childhood. But after becoming the Controller, he didn't think about keeping the Gathering Point going. He's already negotiated with those Slave Traders to sell everyone in the Gathering Point. Then he plans to take the money and go somewhere else. This is the legacy my father left behind. I can't let him do this, so I must pass the exam."
Though young, the kid's ambition was not small.
During their conversation, Liu Ning learned this kid's name was Sandy.
"Hey, I see you actually came. Can't you see? There are far too many people here stronger than you. In our Gathering Point, you might be called a Genius, but look around—there are plenty of people younger than you. Thinking you can pass the Junior Warrior assessment is just a pipe dream. Hurry up and get lost back home. This place isn't for you."
The staff had come out, and number 89 had returned to his seat from where he was before. This guy simply looked down on Sandy.
Back in the Gathering Point, the two of them had clashed many times, even coming to blows. So, this guy was very clear about Sandy's strength. If Sandy could pass the Junior Warrior exam, then 100% of the people here could pass. Sandy's ability was at the absolute bottom here.
"Even if I fail the exam, I'll never let you succeed..."
After saying this, Sandy didn't know how to continue. If he failed the exam, there was absolutely no way he could stop this guy, because there were only two Warrior Apprentiles in the Gathering Point.
"Then just wait and see. I told your Deadbeat Dad long ago that our Gathering Point simply couldn't hold on, that We should have disbanded long ago. That way, We could have all gotten a share of the money. Your Deadbeat Dad stubbornly clung to some old beliefs, giving the last of the money to those poor folks. But what good did it do? After they ate it all up, they just kept asking for more. Poverty is an incurable disease. Stupid..."
This guy's clothes were actually quite decent, hard to imagine he came from a poor Gathering Point.
Whenever the Garrison Headquarters allocated funds, this guy would skim a portion. Originally, the common people in the Gathering Point could have had enough to eat, but because of this guy's Greed, one or two people starved to death every month. So, the money in his hands was stained with blood.
Sandy's father had known about it originally, but what could he do? The Gathering Point only had two Warrior Apprentices, and they still relied on them to lead patrols in the Wilderness. If he punished this guy, he'd likely just leave, leaving the Gathering Point with only one Warrior and one Warrior Apprentice.
It was precisely under Sandy's father's leniency that this guy's courage grew bigger and bigger. Even while Sandy's father was still alive, he had already started selling the young women of the Gathering Point. After Sandy's father was injured, he started selling all kinds of people.
Although many people had reported it to the Patrol Office, this was considered an internal matter of your Gathering Point. The Patrol Office simply wouldn't interfere.
Moreover, this guy had publicly stated that if he became the Controller, he would sell everyone. There were still over 6,000 people in the Gathering Point. If he sold them all, he could rake in at least tens of millions.
With that kind of capital, no matter where he went, he could live very well. It was upon hearing this news that Sandy risked coming to take the Junior Warrior assessment.
Liu Ning gradually pieced the whole story together, and a plan began to form in his mind.
He should help Sandy overcome this difficulty, but he absolutely would not help Sandy pass the Junior Warrior assessment.
He needed to help Sandy in another way, while also subduing this subordinate. That would be the perfect solution.
