Chapter Summary
In the past, this guy would have been sent out on his own long ago, because those people couldn't do anything to the Mage's Guild, and their backers were even less respectable. Linley has never forgotten the mage guild's motto: we should not use our strength against humans, but against ferocious beasts. Linley believed that with the ferocious beasts so active now, they certainly couldn't do anything to harm human geniuses.
"How can you speak up for outsiders? This matter has brought so much trouble to our Mage Guild. This brat has poisoned Yale so much that he still hasn't woken up. We've used all our connections, sending every high-level apothecary we could, but there's still no improvement. If I were to encounter this kid, I would kill him. I simply don't believe that killing him would make humans defeat me. Such a thing is impossible. What can the Second Speaker do? No one can offend the dignity of our Mage Guild."
Qian Bin is the vice president of the Mage Guild. He is the kind of person who is obsessive. Since joining the Mage Guild, he has valued the reputation of the Mage Guild above all else. He and Yale are like two peas in a pod, and the two of them often hang out together.
Hearing that Yale suffered such a huge loss, this guy wanted to kill Liu Ning, so he could both avenge Yale and maintain the prestige of the Mage's Guild. So, he was like a firecracker in meetings. And he wasn't just all talk; he was a high-level fire mage with astonishing strength. A single burst of fire from him was no joke; most people couldn't withstand it.
In the past, this guy would have been sent out on his own long ago, because those people couldn't do anything to the Mage's Guild, and their backers were even less respectable. But things are different now. Liu Ning's backers are just as powerful as the Mage's Guild's. Most importantly, there's the current situation at Yale. If they offend Liu Ning too much, what can they do if he doesn't give them the antidote? Are they just going to watch a mage be lost? A mage's dignity is important, of course, but compared to the mage himself, those things are worth sacrificing.
Although the negotiations have ended and a considerable amount of antidote has been provided, as long as Yale hasn't woken up, it means he's still not out of danger. What if that kid has a trump card up his sleeve? Can we afford to lose? Right now, we're at his mercy. If we insist on going against him, the price we might pay is Yale's life. At that point, only the four great magicians will be left in the world. It's not a good thing.
"We must not be reckless. Things are different now. In the past, no one could do anything to us, but now it's different. If we continue to do things the same way as before, it will not do us any good. Our most important thing now is to bring Yale back to life. Everything else can be put aside for the time being. As long as we are alive, we can always rebuild. If Yale is ruined, the strength of our Mage Guild will be greatly reduced."
The speaker was Mr. George, a mid-level mage who was arguably the oldest in the entire Mage Guild. However, his progress was quite slow. Although he wasn't the strongest, his words were generally considered fair, so the Mage Guild took his opinions seriously. When he spoke, everyone else nodded in agreement. Even the hot-tempered Qian Bin agreed with Mr. George. If they were to fall out with Liu Ning, no one could say for sure that Yale would return safely. Who could bear that responsibility then?
"I know you are all dissatisfied, especially Qian Bin. We know about your relationship with Yale. Although we sometimes clash with Yale, we are at least a unit. Now we have to consider everything. The first thing to consider is Yale's health, and the second is the strength of the other side. Although this is not what you want to face, I must tell you that if we take action against this kid, the Human Council will probably not tolerate us. We have done too many excessive things in the past. If we go against the tide again this time, I believe that the major families and the Human Council will give us a bitter lesson. Otherwise, we will be too lawless."
George saw that everyone's faces were grim and understood what was going on. Since the founding of the Mage Guild, almost no one had dared to offend their dignity. Suddenly, a young man appeared, first ignoring some of the mages' moves, then defeating them, and now refusing to admit his mistake during negotiations, leaving the Mage Guild with a bitter pill to swallow. Naturally, everyone was dissatisfied with this psychological gap, so their various feelings were understandable. However, at this stage, it was best to remain calm and wait for Yale to recover before making any further moves.
“I agree with Mr. George’s statement. I have also read Liu Ning’s resume before, and he is indeed not a simple person. Most importantly, he has made great contributions to human society. If we insist on retaliating against him at this time, it will put us on the opposite side of human society. The purpose of the Mage Guild is to lead humanity to defeat the ferocious beasts. But if we take action against this Mr. Liu, what does the purpose of our Mage Guild mean? We cruelly persecute and kill the ferocious beasts. What are we then?”
Within the Mage Guild, Linley was quite an anomaly. He had a mild temper and treated others with great gentleness, making him almost a perfect person. When Linley first arrived, others thought he might be hiding something, that he was just like any other mage. But now, eight years have passed. If a bad person could truly conceal himself like that, it could only mean that he was incredibly capable, or that he was actually a good person at heart.
Throughout these years, Linley has mostly been with those who hunt ferocious beasts. Linley has never forgotten the mage guild's motto: we should not use our strength against humans, but against ferocious beasts.
Linley believed that with the ferocious beasts so active now, they certainly couldn't do anything to harm human geniuses. Even if their dignity was temporarily damaged, they could resolve it through negotiation. If they were to take action in private, it would not be in line with the principles of the Mage's Guild, and it would be even more disrespectful to humanity.
