Chapter Summary
The System's detection range is only five hundred meters, yet within that radius it has already picked up a thousand Vicious Beasts. If they found no solution before daybreak, Everyone would have to stay upstairs without making the slightest sound, or the beasts below would notice and they would be finished. Though this might be the final outcome, a responsible captain would never voice it so early; he should spur Everyone to find solutions and only say this when all else failed.
The System's detection range is only five hundred meters, yet within that radius it has already picked up a thousand Vicious Beasts. As for those farther away, there must be several hundred more. Liu Ning was starting to feel a headache coming on—looks like We are really in trouble.
Liu Ning did a quick estimate: even in the rosiest scenario, the surrounding Vicious Beasts numbered above three thousand. Moments ago We were thinking of rescuing others; Now We ourselves are trapped in this hopeless situation. We'd better take stock of our own plight—if We mishandle it, All people could lose their lives here. Even if Our Squad's strength were doubled, breaking out would still be next to impossible.
No one intended to sleep; Everyone cast glances around. The words of Others can be doubted, but one's own eyes are trustworthy. Seeing the dense masses of Vicious Beasts and recalling their razor fangs, confidence drained away. Moments ago We pitied others; tomorrow night it might be us being devoured.
If the Vicious Beasts were fewer, by daylight they could definitely slash their way out, but the enemy's numbers have multiplied more than tenfold. However capable Liu Ning is, he has his limits, and hearts began to chill.
“Don't panic yet. Let's observe carefully. Even if our original retreat route is blocked, check whether any direction around the village offers a way out.”
Liu Ning's steady voice rang out like a shot of stimulant. Whether or not the idea worked, Everyone Now had a short-term goal and began reconnoitering the surroundings.
Half an hour later they trudged back to their original spot, crestfallen. As expected, nighttime movement had drawn an astonishing number of Vicious Beasts. Not just in their direction—every surrounding area teemed with beasts; escape was impossible.
Everyone Now understood their predicament: the tall building they occupied stood in the center, ringed by countless Vicious Beasts—trapped on every side.
Zhang Da Xue, more experienced, knew what dawn would bring. If they remained undetected they could last a few days, but once the beasts below spotted them—though the stairs had been destroyed—the creatures could still form human ladders to climb up. If that failed, they could simply use their powerful bodies to topple the entire structure.
When Everyone fell to the ground, the Warrior Apprentices would be the first to die. Even a Machine Gunner would have to prepare in advance; pulling out a Machine Gun in the chaos would achieve little.
Besides, a Machine Gunner's fire has a numerical limit, and the Vicious Beasts below far exceed that. Even with Liu Ning and Wang Fang swapping reloads, the coordination would have to be flawless—one slip and they would still die.
Liu Ning kept the full truth to himself. The System had just run a simulation: even with Liu Ning and Wang Fang alternating reloads, the chance of error was too high. Only by cutting the error rate to 3% could they break out—maintaining 97% accuracy in these conditions was impossible unless the goddess of luck herself possessed you.
“Captain, any suggestions?”
At this point Zhang Da Xue looked toward Lie Lei—he was still their Squad captain and ought to say something.
Their time was short—perhaps only tonight remained. If they found no solution before daybreak, Everyone would have to stay upstairs without making the slightest sound, or the beasts below would notice and they would be finished.
Of course they could hold out on the rooftop, but their supplies were limited. Once those were gone they would starve—no long-term answer.
“What can I say? I'm no longer the core of this team. Can't you see? In my experience, there's no way out. We'll stay here, consume our supplies, and when they're gone We scatter and run—whoever escapes, escapes.”
No one expected Lie Lei to speak thus. Though this might be the final outcome, a responsible captain would never voice it so early; he should spur Everyone to find solutions and only say this when all else failed. With several days of supplies left, This Fellow was already giving up—hardly a worthy leader.
If it truly came to that, only two in the group would likely escape: the two War General-level Experts. In a disordered flight, unorganized, they were faster and could trample others to break free—Everyone else would be their stepping-stones.
After Lie Lei finished, Everyone basically understood.
In truth it was the only option left; in this state Everyone could only look out for themselves.
Zhang Da Xue believed she could escape, but she glanced at her brother. The siblings had shared weal and woe in the Wilderness for years—how could she abandon him? If she returned alone, how could she face their parents and her brother's family?
“Remember this: if tomorrow it really comes to that, don't hesitate—charge out. Your strength far surpasses mine; you must break free. You are our whole family's hope. I'll never get past Advanced Warrior in this life, but you are a War General-level Expert—Everyone at home is counting on you. If you defy me, I'll jump off this roof tonight, and my sacrifice will be for nothing. Tomorrow I'll draw the Vicious Beasts for you—you must get out.”
Usually taciturn, Zhang Da Lei Now seized his sister by the collar and snarled the words at her.
Zhang Da Xue, always the tough woman, shed tears at that moment…
